He goes by many names: The Murderer of Gaia. The Destroyer of Atlantis. Others call him son, husband, and father. To most gamers, however, he’s simply Kratos, The God of War. Over the past decade, Kratos has become such a huge gaming icon that it’s hard to believe that he’s only ten years old. The first God of War title premiered on the PlayStation 2 back in 2005, and took the world by storm with its solid combat, its pulpy setting, its brutal boss fights, and yes, its indulgent sex and violence....

Sony’s genre-defining racer, Gran Turismo 5, has been in players’ hands for nearly a year now. Always designed to be a living, changing experience, a number of additions have already been made to the game, including multiplayer vehicle damage and remote racing via Gran Turismo Anywhere. Now, the biggest content update yet is on its way to Gran Turismo 5, and it won’t cost players a thing. Chief among the new features added in the Spec 2 update are cockpit views for every vehicle in the game....

After months of build-up, and various red herrings, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was officially announced in late March, just in time for E3 2013. Now, after seeing what the competition was bringing, Kojima has realized he needs to work even harder. Coming out of E3 2013, we were pleasantly surprised by Airtight Games’ Murdered: Soul Suspect. The game flew very far under our radar heading into the show, but after its presentation at Square Enix’s booth we were intrigued by the game’s premise and its unique fusion of storytelling and gameplay. But now that Murdered: Soul Suspect has arrived — on both current and last-gen platforms — we are disappointed to report that much of that initial promise was simply that....

Valve recently opened up the possibility for paid Skyrim Steam mods, letting programmers make cosmetic, story and other modifications. The program was met with ire on several fronts. Upset gamers became afraid that they might have to pay for things that had previously been free, while others raised concerns that code might be plagiarized or that software updates might break the mod they paid for. Valve’s distribution of the funds also came under suspicion— Valve and the game’s developers would split 75% of the profits while the modder would receive the remaining 25%....

It’s been a few months since we last heard any news about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the forthcoming Marvel movie tie-in, but now it’s time to finally blow the lid of this thing. Activision has officially unveiled their forthcoming game in a brand new reveal trailer, which sports some familiar gameplay and some familiar faces, but a new approach to the Spider-Man mythos. Capcom’s push out of 2D character animation is prevalent as they masterfully animated an amazing trailer that breaks the boundaries of the space that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 never dreamed of. The silent protagonist is slowly fading from popularity with the ubiquity of voice acting and improvements to writing in recent gaming history, but they still pop up every now and then. The following list pays tribute to the greatest quiet heroes of the RPG genre. For the most part, players barely even make dialogue choices for the protagonist, but several entries make exceptions. After all, one of the goals of a silent protagonist is helping better put the player into the hero’s shoes, and letting the player pick some dialogue without it being voiced aloud still accomplishes this goal in more open, narrative-drive RPGs....

Over the years, the video game industry has shown a serious preference of dropping players into armed combat - and where war can be found, firearms are fruitful. But not ever game developer has made it their goal to recreate real-world weaponry, or speculate on how firearms of the future might differ. Some have, instead, brought life to weapons that could simply never exist in reality. It’s an odd goal, but one that has led to some seriously astounding results....

Naughty Dog is easily one of the best developers around, and The Last of Us is a great example of what this studio can deliver. The zombie apocalypse trope might’ve been done to death, but only a studio like Naughty Dog could’ve revitalized the genre with a fresh take that made the entire scenario equal parts familiar and refreshing. With the rampant success that The Last of Us enjoyed, it was only a matter of time before gamers would be clamoring for a sequel to this story....

JRPGs are some of the most beloved games in the industry as a whole with fans specifically connecting with the various characters in each one of them. There truly is a JRGP for everyone from whimsical fantasy adventures to space epics and even some horror-tinged experiences. One of the best aspects of any JRGP is the character designs. More often than not, JRPGs feature a plethora of both playable and non-playable characters....

Let’s go over a few things before jumping into the meat of this article. Opinions on games are very subjective. A 10/10 masterpiece from one person may be a 0/10 dud for the next. That’s why Metacritic was used as a mediator for this list as sort of a set of guidelines. Open-world RPGs used to be relegated to the PC gaming space, but they started making their way to consoles with Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind’s original Xbox port, and became commonplace during the PS3 and Xbox 360 era. The current PlayStation generation is slowly coming to a close, but that does not mean the PS4 is done gifting gamers incredible new experiences. As we approach the supposed and hopefully final release date of Cyberpunk 2077, it can be hard to stay optimistic given how many delays have already taken place. COD: WW2 sees the juggernaut FPS series returning to its roots after years of increasingly ridiculous forays into the future, culminating in last years adventure to “Punch Jon Snow In The Face IN SPACE” Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. That’s what I assume Infinite Warfare was about, I didn’t actually play it. I heard there was a pretty good robot sidekick though so I should get around to it someday. The return to the World War 2 setting is a big deal for Call of Duty, which played a very large role in creating a whole genre of video games at the turn of the 21st century....

While details are still slim regarding Battlefield 3’s final piece of downloadable content, appropriately titled End Game, a new image revealed during Electronic Arts’ Summer Showcase has tipped us off to one of the DLC’s new vehicular additions. In the past, vehicle-based combat in DICE’s warzones has been relegated to tanks, armored vehicles, and a whole slew of jets, planes, and choppers, but End Game will mark the first time players will get behind the handlebars of a motorcycle....
