It’s such a simple idea: creators post their plans online, and fans contribute as much - or as little - as they want to make sure that the project becomes a reality. It works, too. Kickstarter is directly responsible for innovative hardware like the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset, and the Ouya, a budget-priced gaming console....

Many months ago, Microsoft promised to deliver the next chapter in the Halo saga on the Xbox One before the end of 2014. When Halo 5: Guardians was confirmed for a 2015 release date, rumors continued to grow that the Xbox One Halo experience would be a Halo 2 Anniversary Edition or maybe even a Halo: The Master Chief Collection, that included ports of all four numbered games in the franchise....

It turns out that reports of a new Scribblenauts crossing over with the DC Comics universe were accurate. Warner Bros. Interactive today officially announced that Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure is indeed in development and will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and PC later this year. As one would expect from any Scribblenauts title, let alone one featuring recognizable heroes and villains from the world of DC, there will be a surreal number of objects that can be summoned into existence thanks to Maxwell’s magical notepad....

The jam-packed release schedule of games at the moment may have fans of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim already moving on to the next title, but you don’t have to look far to find someone still up to their iron horns in the game’s vast quest system. To help the die-hard Dovahkiin scour every inch of Tamriel’s northernmost province, Bethesda has finally given their blessing for the first official Skyrim map app for the iPhone and iPad....

The private beta for Starhawk ended on January 3rd, but fans anticipating the spiritual successor to 2007’s highly acclaimed Warhawk will now have another opportunity to get in on some bug finding, glitch cleaning action. The Starhawk multiplayer beta is entering its public phase, and will begin rolling out to a select group of gamers on Tuesday, January 17. The announcement came via the PlayStation Blog, but with the oxymoron that the “open” beta will be briefly limited to PlayStation Plus subscribers and old dogs from the closed beta (provided their save files are intact)....

Although no developer is a fan of piracy, most accept it as a natural, albeit disappointing, part of today’s society. They try their best to deter gamers from it where possibly, but typically there isn’t much a company can do besides plead with their fan base. That being said, there are a few developers who have no problem deterring pirates in some truly clever ways. Ubisoft, for example, reserved their FOV (field of view) slider for the first Far Cry 4 patch, meaning any who pirated the game early on were left without the option....

What defines DLC today? Is it the steady intravenous drip of “premium” packages endlessly circulating content through a game’s established universe - replenishing singleplayer with missions and sidequests and characters; multiplayer with maps and modes and weapons at every stagnating pulse of excitement? Or is it something larger: the concentrated effort of a developer’s vision and resources, built through months of post-release toiling? The existence of a Titanfall Beta was promised long ago by the developers at Respawn Entertainment, and today they have made good.
