As we run into December, it’s that time of year again where gamers come together to debate, argue and ultimately celebrate the previous twelve months of gaming. While everyone will keep a mental note of their favorite game, Spike TV’s awards ceremony often signals the beginning of ‘Game of the Year’ articles popping up just about everywhere on the internet. Although procedure was a little different this year as the VGAs went through a bit of a makeover....

It seems that when 343 Industries decides that it’s time to discuss their next Halo project, they don’t hold anything back. Besides releasing set photos and cast shots of the upcoming live-action web series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, story details confirm that the saga predates the previous games by three decades. The minds behind both Halo 4 and the series have long been referring to the fact that the story of the next game began with the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn long before the Master Chief ended up marooned on the vessel at the close of Halo 3....

Master Chief is one of Microsoft’s most iconic characters - despite being, in the original Halo, little more than an empty vessel for players to fill as they battled the Covenant (and the Flood). At the time, the character had a backstory but no voice or distinguishing characters - only to be fleshed out in later installments (and a variety of extended universe stories in other mediums). Yet, even though Chief is the helmeted “face” of the Halo game series, his AI partner in saving the universe, Cortana, might actually be the most loved....

Not every video game series with serious promise gets to enjoy two sequels, but inFAMOUS: Second Son isn’t just keeping the franchise name alive, but being held up as one of Sony’s spotlighted launch titles for the PlayStation 4. While some might think that being a console-exclusive brand brings serious perks - and it does, as noted by the previous video detailing the new PS4 controller - starting the series wasn’t a cakewalk for developer Sucker Punch....

Fans of the classic Jagged Alliance series will be happy to hear they have a chance to return to Arulco in early 2012, as developer bitComposer has recently confirmed a February release date for Jagged Alliance: Back in Action. Since the first developer diaries came out in May, the game has progressed from a simple mod-look-alike to something potentially greater, though the ultimate verdict will depend on whether hardcore fans of the franchise accept Back in Action as a proper Jagged Alliance title, despite coming from a new developer....

While the indie development scene has shown a tremendous amount of growth over the past few years, the triple-A console titles are still king. But, even though triple-A titles typically get the most recognition when it comes to success, the development and publishing surrounding those games might not be as healthy for the industry as it once was. Klei Entertainment, makers of Shank and Shank 2, were showing off their latest title Mark of the Ninja on the floor of PAX East 2012. The pace of this game is much slower than Klei’s past projects, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. Mark of the Ninja is very much a stealth title where players will have to take to the shadows to avoid and/or take down enemies. One of the first things players will notice about this game is its art style....

It should come as no surprise that this year’s edition of the annual Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare 3, is on pace to break its predecessor’s records. Much like Black Ops blew Modern Warfare 2’s numbers out of the water, so do we expect Modern Warfare 3 to do the same to Black Ops. What’s more interesting to note, though, is the fact that pre-orders for Modern Warfare 3 are nearly five times that of its biggest competitor Battlefield 3....

Even if you haven’t been keeping tabs on the game, the premise definitely offers a compelling blend of Kinect functionality, fighting game action, and Xbox Live brand fun. But even if PowerUp Heroes brings superpowers to every player’s Xbox Live avatar, does this game manage to be more than an hour-long flash in the pan experience?...

After months of speculation, Rainbow Six: Patriots was eventually confirmed in 2011 with a logo, a trailer and an intriguing plot about a patriotic, anti-government terrorist group. Many were excited by the long-running franchise’s return, but after long stretches of silence about the title, that interest somewhat fizzled out. Fan support was piqued once more however, in spite of the radio silence from the publisher (and amidst rumours that Rainbow Six: Patriots had been cancelled), with mentions of the game on a developer’s professional profile....

One of the most thoroughly enjoyable games of 2013 has without a doubt been Ubisoft’s Rayman Legends. After jumping ship and abandoning Wii U exclusivity, the title was promptly delayed until this past September, but that didn’t stop a majority of critics from instantly falling in love with the quirky platformer’s charm, challenge, and overall addictiveness — read Game Rant’s review. Although the software failed to move as many units as Ubisoft had hoped, the developer has decided that Rayman and friends should make the jump to next-gen consoles....

Rise of the Rakghouls, the first major game update for Star Wars: The Old Republic, released today. Mere hours after the update went live, players discovered an exploit in Ilum that allows Valor to be gained at a massively accelerated rate. In a post on the game’s official forums, BioWare promises that an “official response” to the situation is forthcoming. While exploits and glitches can hardly be considered strangers to massively multiplayer online role playing games, the situation with Rise of the Rakghouls is particularly unfortunate....

Even without revealing any actual details or gameplay footage, one of the most exciting announcements that came from E3 2013 and Electronic Arts’ Media Briefing was the confirmation that developer DICE is developing Star Wars: Battlefront. A third installment in the Battlefront series is something fans (and our team at Game Rant) have waited on for years, and when rumors surfaced periodically of its developments and cancellations, one thing we’ve written into our content is that DICE - the makes of the Battlefield series and Frosbite 2/3 game engines - should take the reins for that series....

Leave it to a Star Wars property to claim yet another top spot in a category. Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare’s critically acclaimed subscription MMO, is now the fastest growing MMO in gaming history. The Old Republic already boasts more than one million registered users since launching December 20, 2011. However, BioWare and Electronic Arts will continue to steadily pulse players into the game through the holiday period and into 2012 by limiting supply in order to create a smooth and more enjoyable player experience - all the while growing the community further....

Earlier this week, Ubisoft revealed that their upcoming open world racing game The Crew would run at 1080p30 when it launched this November. This, of course, drew considerable criticism from gamers, especially those who consider any product not running at 1080p60 as inferior. However, Ubisoft was quick to respond and say that, although The Crew is currently locked at 30 frames per second, the development team is still shooting for 60 fps at launch....

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a video game that took many by surprise. Initially titled “Gods and Monsters,” this game was created by the same studio behind Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Both are open-world games and borrow inspiration from Greek mythology, and both are incredibly impressive. As an open-world title, there are many things the players can do while playing Immortals Fenyx Rising outside of just doing the main campaign. The game is littered with side quests, a few of them even hidden that not everyone will be able to encounter them on their first playthrough....

The Luigi’s Mansion series is a unique take on the Mario franchise where the other brother has to save the day. In Luigi’s Mansion 3, the game takes place in a hotel as opposed to a mansion. Because of this change of location, Luigi must brave different floors to get to the top and eventually beat King Boo. There are over 15 floors in the game and each one has its own unique theme that makes it stand out from the rest....

New Horizons has well and truly taken the spotlight in the past few months, with Animal Crossing fans ogling over countless beautiful island designs. Players have spent hours creating outdoor cafes, libraries, and other areas for their villagers to interact with.
