Vampires have been appearing in popular media for over 200 years, with the first bloodsucking fiend taking center stage in John Polidori’s 1819 “The Vampyre”. Since then, the supernatural beings with the need to feed have become a staple addition to any good gothic horror. That is, despite recent iterations causing them to appear more like a sparkly heart-throb than monstrous cannibalistic terror. With games such as Skyrim and The Sims allowing you to transform your characters into vampires and even woohoo in a coffin, it may appear to some that the blood-sucker’s frightening edge has been lost for good....

Open-worlds have become a prominent feature of AAA gaming. Just a quick look through some of the most anticipated releases of the last five years will show numerous games that have utilized the improvements in hardware and game engines, to break through the invisible walls of linearity and provide players with enormous maps filled with side quests, towns, loot, and secrets. All Aliens franchise video games tend to get a lot of players excited. The series is scary, exciting, and full of action -perfect for a video game. Sega fell a little flat with Aliens vs Predator last year but Aliens: Colonial Marines is shaping up to be a great entry in the first person shooter genre. However, what about a side scrolling adventure game? It would take a lot to squeeze the frightening feeling of the Aliens universe into a low quality graphic Nintendo DS game....

It’s been a turbulent development for Battlefield Hardline. The cops-and-robbers shooter from Visceral Games was originally slated for release this year, but had to be pushed back to early 2015. This added the game to a list of major titles delayed until next year. However, Visceral Games and publisher EA have tried to improve the quality of gameplay on offer in spite of delays. The beta feedback from players has translated into extensive changes, and Visceral has promised that Battlefield Hardline will work at launch, and won’t suffer from the same problems faced by Battlefield 4....

At this point, the debate over whether or not competitive gaming is is a ‘real’ sport seems irrelevant; last summer’s Dota 2 championships attracted over twenty million viewers and were streamed live on ESPN2 and ESPN3. Top-level Call of Duty players can now pull in up to $700,000 a year, and American colleges are starting to hand out scholarships to competitive game players, while the biggest gaming tournaments sell out 45,000-seat stadiums with ease....

Last week Valve made three announcements in the SteamOS, Steam Machines and the Steam Controller. Fans were holding out for some kind of news on Half-Life 3 - or Portal 3 or Left 4 Dead 3, etc. - but alas, no word came leaving many to wonder if the game will ever see the light of day. Although before that disappointment has even cooled, Valve is out again leaving hints and playing with fan’s hearts....

A highlight of the Xbox E3 2013 Media Briefing was the brief cinematic teaser teasing the return of Master Chief. At the end of the day, after EA, Ubisoft and Sony had their keynote presentations, Microsoft held an Xbox Showcase event where media could - for the first time ever- get hands-on with the Xbox One, peripherals and most of the games unveiled today. And one of the available games I made sure to play was the new Halo… but it wasn’t the eagerly anticipated followup to 343 Industries’ Halo 4....

On the surface, the task being set before 343 Industries seems too monumental to accomplish: develop a worthy successor to Halo 3 that features as much new content as it does nostalgia. Rather than shrinking from the challenge, the studio has stepped up - and out of Bungie’s shadow - even more than might have been expected. It may be blasphemous to presume, but all signs point to Halo 4 being the largest, most comprehensive, and story-driven release in the series so far....

Rarely does a game span hundreds of years without any editing, yet in Hero Generations the player can watch their characters travel through the millennium one year at a time. Carefully crafted civilizations rise and crumble in the tides of time while heroes must wade through never-ending enemies for glory and riches, and most importantly of all for their families. Hero Generations is a rogue-like 4X strategy game with an intriguing twist....

In what is fast becoming the biggest event in virtual sports, EA Sports has released their Madden simulation for Super Bowl XLVIII. It was a snow-covered affair for the Seahawks and the Broncos, but in the end there could be only one winner…well, at least one virtual winner. Using Madden NFL 25 on the Xbox One, EA Sports ran a full simulation of Super Bowl 48, and ultimately it was the Denver Broncos who came away with the Lombardi Trophy....

After much of the Mass Effect 3 news these past few weeks has centered around the new appearance of Female Shepard, it’s nice to know that there is still more of the game to be excited for. The latest batch of screenshots in from PAX Prime 2011 return the spotlight to the more familiar face of Commander Shepard, and some of the action that he and his squad will be dishing out against their enemies....

As J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world once again hits the international box office, the next video game adventure set within it is already in development, set to take thee franchise in a darker direction with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. To give a sense of the visual style and character design - as well as the unique abilities (and lethality) players can look forward to in the game’s hero - a new batch of screenshots and concept art has been released....

It’s been just over a month since the last Minecraft update, an understandable amount of time given how busy Mojang has been with the announcement of Minecraft coming to Xbox 360 with Kinect support and Minecraft coming to the Xperia Play. Despite the busy times in their studio, Mojang have now released the 1.7 update, which fans have frequently thought of as the ‘Adventure Update,’ though it is now clear that the adventure update will be the 1....

Saints Row 4 is a sequel that doesn’t shy away from ambition. It knows when to go all out and when to reel it in, and it also knows what its audience expects from the game. As a result, developer Volition was able to create a game that basks in the absurd — that bucks realism in favor of pure, unadulterated fun. And a lot of that fun comes from the game’s super powers....

Speedrunning is a popular activity among many gamers. Whether it’s attempting to set a new official world record for speedrunning a particular game, or just trying to get through as many games as possible as fast as possible, gamers enjoy rushing through their favorite titles. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron looks awesome, there’s no doubt about that. But beyond the flashy trailers and cool character reveals is developer High Moon Studios’ dedication to create one of the most unique gameplay experiences around, as facilitated by main characters that have two forms of combat. With the announcements of special tie-in third-party hardware arriving and teasers for the upcoming film debuting at Comic-Con, WoW should be experiencing a bit of a renaissance just in time for Warlords of Draenor’s arrival....
