After many in the industry wondered if Electronic Arts would embrace the technical prowess of DICE and the Frostbite Engine, and make Battlefield an annualized series, it seems the question has been answered. After months of rumors and speculation, an update to Battlelog has revealed new details and assets created for the next entry in the series: Battlefield: Hardline, a SWAT/police-themed title coming from Dead Space studio Visceral Games.The shift from a modern (or WWII-era) battlefield to the confines of urban defense may seem like quite a leap, but those who have been following the rumored project may find the reveal less shocking....

Electronic Arts is officially enamored with the “premium” service concept. It was only earlier this month during E3 when their first foray, Battlefield Premium, for Battlefield 3, was kicked into gear at EA’s press conference. The service lavishes gamers with free, early access to DLC; exclusive weapons, customization options, and double XP weekends; and the ability to reset all stats on Battlelog - but only after payment on a $50 subscription fee, a near equivalent to buying another full game....

Heading into fall 2013, Battlefield 4 was easily one of our most anticipated games of that year. That anticipation soon transformed into disappointment after, to say the least, Battlefield 4’s launch went off with plenty of hitches. Yet, DICE has vowed to improve their retail product, specifically on the multiplayer side of things. That shouldn’t overshadow the game’s missteps at launch, or the wider implications that might have, but the good news is Battlefield 4 is getting more stable....

After making a huge splash as an Arma 2 mod in 2009, DayZ is slowly developing into its own standalone release. The title is currently in the midst of early alpha testing, which anyone can get in on, and should eventually become readily available from there. Unfortunately, as developer Bohemia Interactive continues to refine DayZ they will do so with the knowledge that creator Dean Hall is not in it for the long haul....

Well, you can’t say Bungie isn’t listening. The Destiny developer today released Update 1.0.2, which finally fixes the game’s previously frustrating and inconsistent Engram system. You can read the read the full patch notes over at Bungie.net but the main thing you need to know is that Legendary (purple) Engrams acquired by players will now always produce a Legendary or higher (Exotic) level item. Praise be to the Traveler. In addition, all Rare (blue) Engrams will now always produce a Rare quality item or higher; but Bungie didn’t stop there, as all Rare Engrams now also have a higher chance of turning into legendary items....

Late last week, Square Enix announced plans to tease a new upcoming game via Twitch, prompting instant fan speculation. Most figured that the mystery game was the next Deus Ex title, given that SE said this was a Western developed project, but any official confirmations would need to wait until the stream went live. However, before the mysterious stream and ARG could even complete, crafty tipsters spread the word that the new Square Enix game was indeed a Deus Ex: Human Revolution sequel....

Although E3 is just a day away, the leaks are still trickling out ahead of the summer’s biggest gaming event. Plenty of developers and publishers have fallen victim to early E3 leaks and many gamers are starting to feel like there may be no surprises left come showtime. Bethesda will take the stage tomorrow in a special Sunday night presentation, but the company has already announced Doom 4 and Fallout 4 to build up hype....

Last year’s Dragon Age: Inquisition saw the fledgling franchise re-establish itself to fans and critics alike after its predecessor Dragon Age 2 threatened to nip the series in the bud. Earlier today, Bioware lead writer David Gaider announced via Twitter that he is moving on from Dragon Age to work on an as-yet-unannounced title. Gaider has been a creative force behind the franchise since its earliest inception, and has since worked on each game in the series, as well as penning tie-in novels and comic books....

With many notable critics already naming Dragon Age Inquisition a guaranteed ‘Game of the Year’ candidate (amidst a wave of underwhelming AAA releases), and the impending holiday breaks many consumers will be devoting to their chosen home console - or PC - it’s safe to bet their will be more wannabe Inquisitors joining the fight with each day. Given just how large, varied, open-ended and indeed, intimidating the world of Inquisition can be to even experienced RPG fans, we thought it wise to give a few pointers....

While there’s still no official confirmation from Sony that God of War 4 is in development, a substantial amount of information has begun to build up that suggests it is. First came word that Sony Santa Monica, the studio behind the numbered God of War titles was staffing up for another God of War adventure, which all but confirmed that gamers were going to see Kratos return. And then, just last week came some new game tidbits that revealed God of War 4 might feature a co-op mode that would allow players to inhabit either Kratos or Deimos....

In just a few weeks time, Mad Max: Fury Road will grace movie theaters across the world. The post-apocalyptic film has built up a considerable amount of hype thanks to the jaw-dropping trailers, featuring Tom Hardy as the titular anti-hero. However, lucky fans of the franchise are getting a double dose of Max this year. Besides the new film, a Mad Max open world video game is on the way from the talented people at Avalanche Studios....

Casual fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise may associate the series with stealth gameplay and government conspiracies, but Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a whole different animal. The new trailer released in anticipation of Revengeance’s appearance at E3 2012 delves into the troubled past of protagonist Raiden, and shows off more of that fantastic slicing and dicing. Raiden’s participation in the first Liberian civil war as a child was the subject of the game’s earlier viral marketing, and succeeded at piquing our interest in the man beneath the metal....

While open-world titles can offer up some of the most freedom in gaming, they can also fall into the pitfall of continually reusing familiar and sometimes stale game mechanics. With the advent of a new generation of consoles though, it’s refreshing to see developers like Monolith attempting to eschew these doldrums by introducing new twists on existing mechanics in upcoming open-world title Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Upgrade systems are a dime-a-dozen in open-world titles....

You know you’ve hit the big-time when the only descriptions left to express your success are galaxy-sized (just ask the winners of the annual Mr. Universe competition). Yet that’s exactly how big Minecraft has become; and it isn’t showing signs of slowing. Officially launched back in 2011, the pop cultural phenomenon that is Minecraft celebrated two major milestones this week, achieving a combined 18 million sales for the Xbox, PC, Linux & Mac platforms and announcing just how successful the port of the series to Microsoft’s home console has become....

Some two weeks before the actual release of Modern Warfare 3, Activision has decided to release the launch trailer for their highly anticipated shooter title. As is custom with Call of Duty games these days the latest Modern Warfare 3 trailer features plenty of explosions and over the top action - that will be sure to keep any fan entertained. In a recent interview Glen Schofield of Sledgehammer Games said that the team put a lot more effort into the story of Modern Warfare 3....

Gamers are being sent postcards and DVDs with the message “they’re coming” and it seems to be tied to Fortnite. In the last week many gamers have reported receiving postcards, posters and DVDs that contain the message “they’re coming”. There’s no confirmation that it’s related to Fortnite yet, but similar symbols and quests have been found within the game, so it seems incredibly likely that it’s teasing the next season’s theme....

Things haven’t all gone smoothly for Thief since the reboot from Eidos Montreal was announced, but that doesn’t seem to be slowing Garrett down. Not one to be swayed by public opinion, development troubles or die-hard fans who are resistant to change, this incarnation of the titular thief is all about getting the job done, and taking from the wealthy what they most hold dear. In the lead-up to E3 2013, a brand new cinematic trailer has been released, getting fans yet another step deeper into the mind of a thief - with closer looks at the clothing, the weapons, and the tools of the trade....

It’s always a nice bonus when everyone is included in a “private” beta - with most PSN users in firm hold of a PlayStation Plus account after the PSN outage, it’s nearly impossible to miss out on Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta. Game Rant got a chance to see what the online version of Drake’s adventure was shaping up to be during an E3 hands-on demo - but this time, with thousands of players taking part online, we get to see a more robust idea of what to expect come November....

What is better than enjoying a great video game? Perhaps enjoying a great video game with a friend. When a game lets two or more buddies go through the story or a separate mode together, it immediately elevates the experience. It can even turn a bad game into something fun. For one reason or another, the ten games below squandered a perfectly good opportunity for some intense cooperative action. It is unfortunate, but we’re sure the developers would have liked to put co-op in if they had the time, resources, or technical power on the hardware to do so....
