There are times when it’s hard to go back and play even the best NES games. There are times when it’s hard to look at even some of the best-looking NES games. There has never been a time when it’s difficult to listen to the best NES soundtracks. There’s a timeless quality to the best songs of the chiptune era. Granted, some NES songs simply sound better when they’re played by a live orchestra or are being reimagined in some remastered way, but that’s honestly a testament to the longevity of those tunes....

The idea of ‘horror’ is one quite familiar to video game fans, with the like of Resident Evil and Dead Space just two examples of games intended to shock their players until they no longer wish to see what’s around the next corner. But the concept of ’terror’ has always been more difficult; steeping players in fear up to their eyeballs using something other than horrifying imagery. It’s still early days for Alien: Isolation, but make no mistake: after our time with the game at E3 2014, we were downright terrified....

Every fan of the Assassin’s Creed series knows just how fond Ubisoft is of creating both cinematic and gameplay trailers. With Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag’s launch trailer finally here, we can’t help but think more trailers lie in store. With a new game engine, expanded multiplayer and an entirely new game mode, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded aims jump into the crowded shooter genre during one of the busiest release schedules ever seen....

When gamers think of JRPGs the sprawling epics of Square Enix probably come to mind, but in Last Word there are no young, doe-eyed protagonists wielding weapons twice their size. In fact, the sharpest weapon in the game is a word, as characters must lock wits in the battle of conversation. In the aristocratic society of Last Word, whoever speaks last holds the power. Funnily enough, this power is often used for nothing more than insulting others or forcing characters to give up their bow ties....

Mojang’s block-buster hit Minecraft is continuously evolving through frequent updates, each encouraging plenty of hilarious fan videos, creating a seemingly endless cycle of growth for the brand. It’s been ported to a variety of consoles and mobile devices, each breaking records. These ports are often far behind the PC edition of the game in terms of features and content, and the Xbox 360 Edition is no different - which is why Title Update 12 is great news for console-based fans of the game....

Although some might not be aware of it, the Mortal Kombat franchise has a deep lore that extends well beyond the games. Some of the early titles touched upon those back-stories and relationships, but the most recent MK title put a big spotlight on them with its story mode. For Mortal Kombat X, however, NetherRealm Studios is providing an even deeper story thanks to a prequel digital comic. DC Comics will produce the prequel, which will be written by Shawn Kittelsen with art by Dexter Soy and covers by Ivan Reis....

Although most EA Sports fans got their first take of the next-gen with last year’s games, NHL fans were unfortunately left to wait an extra year. Thankfully, though, the time has come for NHL 15 to finally show gamers what all this next-gen fuss is all about. In fact, members of EA’s Access program are already playing the game as we speak. However, those EA Access members are discovering that NHL 15 is, shall we say, light on the fixings....

When it comes to superhero films, it could be said that Shazam! and Logan are the polar opposites of each other. The former is silly and playful, while the latter is dark and gritty. Yet, despite these differences, the two films still share an interesting commonality; one that many viewers may not initially pick up on at first glance. Shazam! director David F. Sandberg recently took to Twitter to elucidate this congruence, explaining that both movies utilized toys and merchandise as a means to acknowledge their respective superhero worlds....

After Shenmue 3’s surprise reveal during Sony’s E3 2015 Press Conference, news regarding the Kickstarter for the highly anticipated third installment of Yu Suzuki’s innovative series has quickly gained traction with gamers all over the world. Without question, Shenmue 3’s inclusion in Sony’s forum earlier in the week has given the title the exposure needed to pique the curiosity of gamers unfamiliar with the franchise, and stoke the flames of long-time fans....

There are not many superlatives still left unsaid about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, be they positive or negative. From its beautiful landscapes and endless quests, to its maddening glitches and patch problems, Skyrim is in no short supply of water-cooler discussion among gamers. Bethesda promised players a new patch in January, and the 1.4 patch is nearing completion as final testing is being done on all three platforms. While earlier patches have fixed some issues, they also made the game somewhat unstable for some users of various platforms and introduced even more glitches into the game....

Though it was only a few months ago that EA’s forthcoming reboot of Syndicate was revealed, the title is moving full steam ahead with a release date set for later this month. As part of that final promotional push for the game, EA has announced some of the Syndicate’s voice cast, who will portray key characters the player will interact with in the game. First up is Rosario Dawson, most recently seen in the Denzel Washington runaway train film Unstoppable, who will be playing the character of Lily Drawl....

For almost a decade now the survival horror genre has tried to find new ways to reinvent itself. While some franchises, Resident Evil for example, have opted for a more action-heavy focus, others have stripped the formula bare, leaving players with little more than their wits and a flashlight. However, few of those recent titles have found the success that Resident Evil did all those years ago. Which makes the promise of The Evil Within, a title created by original RE director Shinji Mikami, all the more exciting....

At Comic-Con this past weekend, we had the chance to sit down with LEGO Batman 3 voice actor Troy Baker and pick his brain for a few minutes. During our talk we discussed the humor of TT Games’ sequel, how he compares Joker to Batman, and more. One topic that was of particular interest to us was The Last of Us and whether he thinks a sequel is a good idea....
