Sure, the PS2 may have helped make 3D games significantly more “playable,” and yes, it did slowly pull us away from the era of absurdly difficult arcade-style games, but it was also the console that seemingly inspired a new generation of developers to ask “What does the future of incredibly difficult games look like?...

Game development for massive publishers is hard. If you ever talk to a game developer about their craft, you will find out that there can be long stretches of intensive yet monotonous work. As is the same in any job, unless you are driven by enthusiasm and a love of the project, the quality of the work can suffer. It looks like that was the case with the Army of Two franchise’s latest installment The Devil’s Cartel....

While DLC has proven a hot topic in recent years, as developers and publishers are accused of removing missions to be released later, or locking on-disc content for an extra charge, Ubisoft seems to be doing things right with Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Warner Bros. Montreal - the studio entrusted with bringing Batman: Arkham Origins to life - may be a newcomer to the development scene, but the talent driving the game’s vision certainly isn’t. DayZ has become the latest example of community-driven game design and its popularity continues to increase ever since it was recently announced that the ARMA 2 mod would become a standalone game. Zombie MMO DayZ is one of the most popular games ever released on Steam. This is where the LEGO series of games continues to go strong. The Mass Effect Trilogy, arriving November 6th for Xbox 360 and PC, and at a later date for PlayStation 3, bundles all three Mass Effect games together in one modestly priced package. It looks like the heroes of Freezethaw Elimination aren’t the only ones Mei’s putting on ice, as D.Va is AWOL from Overwatch’s battlefield until further notice, according to community manager Josh Nash. A newfound bug meant that, when D.Va hit 0 HP in her mech suit, she’d become invincible. It’s not quite Warzone’s infinite Juggernauts but an unstoppable, unkillable Peni Parker is terrifying in its own right. D.Va has been removed from all game modes, so if you were excited to give her a spin this Winter Wonderland, it looks like you’ll have to wait a tad longer to do so....

The bad news: Rayman Legends, Ubisoft’s follow-up to the wildly imaginative and endlessly replayable Rayman Origins, is a Wii U exclusive. So if you’re looking to get your cooperative platforming on, you’d better also pick up Nintendo’s new console. The good news: if you happen to have already picked up a Wii U, or plan on receiving one over the holidays, the wait won’t be long for Rayman Legends to hit store shelves....

When Electronic Arts and DICE first announced the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront, many gamers were worried the developer and publisher would simply reskin their popular Battlefield games with a Star Wars theme. However, over the last couple months, EA and DICE have shared a great deal of information to prove that this will not be the case, but that Star Wars Battlefront will be its own unique game. Among the recent bits of information released about the shooter include the ability for players to switch between third- and first-person, a feature not available in the Battlefield series, as well as the lack of iron sights for the game’s weapons....
