Undead Labs is removing the negative Morale effect associated with the “Punched Nazis” trait in State of Decay 2. The studio announced that the trait was only intended to have positive effects on your stats and will be making the changes in an upcoming patch.
The announcement was made through a series of tweets, diving deep into the development of the “Punched Nazis” trait – which is actually based on the firsthand experiences of one of Undead Labs’ game designers.
“We created the rare ‘Punched Nazis’ trait long before SoD2’s release,” reads the announcement. “One designer actually told us firsthand stories about punching Nazis in the underground music scene. We loved it and boom, the trait was born.”
When brought into State of Decay 2, the trait initially was designed as an overall positive trait with a skill bonus, granting four stars of Fighting experience and making your character more likely to argue passionately for their beliefs.
As time went on, however, State of Decay 2 saw many of its systems change, including the addition of a “full-fledged Traits UI and a Morale system.” These posed new issues for the team – and brought a strange issue to light with the “Punched Nazis” trait.
“When we implemented the Traits UI, we realized that skill bonuses stop mattering as soon as you’ve leveled your character beyond them, so we hid them behind a neutral ‘Affects Skills’ message. Then when the Morale system arrived, it simplified our original nuanced concept of ‘characters arguing for their beliefs’ into a basic negative Morale effect, representing discord in the community (arguing in general).”
Today, that means the “Punched Nazis” trait displays both positive and negative effects:
However, once the next hotfix goes live, the “Irritable towards other people” text will be removed:
Undead Labs is hoping this will clarify that “Punched Nazis” only has positive effects on your stats – as it rightfully should.
State of Decay 2 is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
