Building on the mythology of the books and the look of the feature films, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North stands to be the major action role-playing game of the Fall (particularly now that Diablo III has officially moved to 2012). Warner Bros. Interactive has played up the cooperative aspect of Lord of the Rings: War in the North since the game was first revealed over a year ago, and it comes to the fore once again in a brand new trailer, dubbed The Power of Three.

However, the Fellowship of three aren’t the only characters of note in the new trailer. For the first time, developer Snowblind Studios has taken the wraps off Urgost the fire-drake. Cunning, powerful, and huge, Urgost is not allied with Mordor, yet the Fellowship of three must face him.

War in the North is looking better than ever in this latest trailer, which again showcases the game’s brutal combat and offers another look at what happens when great eagles attack. Casual observers could be forgiven for thinking that War in the North will be all action and no RPG, but Snowblind’s track record, especially on the Champions of Norrath games, suggests that RPG fans won’t feel left out when they get to go hands on with the game.

Watching War in the North’s active combat, and seeing Urgost for the first time, I’ll admit to having more than a few Dragon Age 2 flashbacks. Famously, fans were not pleased with that game, departing as it did from the mechanics of its predecessor. Can War in the North succeed where Dragon Age 2 failed? Warner Bros. Interactive certainly appear to have a lot of faith in the game, releasing it the same day as Sony’s hugely anticipated Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Will the gamble pay off? The Lord of the Rings: War in the North releases November 1, 2011, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
