Telltale Games’ “choice and consequence” episodic series The Walking Dead offers a powerful narrative experience, but if you’ve been playing the games on anything other than a PC then there’s a good chance you will have encountered one of the numerous technical issues that come with the console versions. It’s hard to get immersed in the hard-hitting emotional drama and excruciating moral choices when they’re coupled with severe lag and glitches.
There’s hope on the horizon, however. Console gamers who haven’t yet played The Walking Dead may want to hold out a little longer before buying it, as both seasons of the game will soon be coming to PS4 and Xbox One where (hopefully) the bugs and performance issues will have been ironed out.
The first season of The Walking Dead, which was declared Game of the Year by critic consensus in 2012, will be available at retail for Xbox One and PS4 on October 14th in North America, in a package that also includes the DLC episode ‘400 Days.’ This will be followed by the release of The Walking Dead: Season Two on October 21st in North America. Both seasons of The Walking Dead will release on Xbox One and PS4 on October 24th in Europe, and The Walking Dead: Season Two will be available for the PlayStation Vita on November 4th.
The announcement of the release dates was accompanied by an accolades trailer for The Walking Dead: Season Two’s finale, which we found to be a little underwhelming compared to that of the previous season. Nonetheless, The Walking Dead remains one of the strongest recent examples of storytelling in video games and is definitely a must-buy for anyone who enjoys playing games with narrative and characters as the main focus.
Telltale Games now has a full work schedule with both Tales From the Borderlands and Game of Thrones currently in development, but The Walking Dead has already been green lit for a third season. Since the ending of The Walking Dead: Season Two can widely vary depending on the decisions made by the player, it will be interesting to see whether Telltale will find a way to make Clementine the protagonist once more, or whether the series will move on to a new character.
The Walking Dead: Season One will release for Xbox One and PS4 on October 14th, 2014, followed by the release of The Walking Dead: Season Two on October 21st.
