Unfortunately, it looks like players who desire a more in-depth and hardcore approach ito their console role playing games will have to wait just a little longer than previously expected. CD Projekt RED has announced that The Witcher 2 for the Xbox 360 has been delayed, but before you fans start to panic, you should hear them out. The delay is due to a desire to deliver a fully polished product, and while that may be an increasingly common explanation, it’s still a good one.
The Witcher 2 turned out to be the envy of console gamers around the world when it was released earlier this year, so the news that it would be coming to the Xbox 360 as well was a dream come true for many. The announcement came at E3 2011, with Projekt Red stating that the game would be specifically designed for the console, not a simple port of the PC version. The development team seemed intent on delivering the best game possible for the Xbox 360, which may explain the delay.
The original release date was scheduled around Q4 2011, but will likely see a push back into 2012. If that’s the case, it could end up competing with BioWare’s Mass Effect 3. That would be a good start to the year for RPG fans, as either would be a great game to pick up to fulfill your role-playing needs, especially considering the stellar review we gave to The Witcher 2.
Studio head Adam Kicinski commented on the reasons for the delay, and why fans have nothing to worry about:
Sharing details could potentially mean gameplay videos of the game running on 360, which would be exciting. The Witcher 2 is definitely one of the most gorgeous games that can run on a PC. The world is vivid, detailed, and well-imagined, so it will be interesting to see how a 360 handles the substantial graphics. But given recent release of Crysis 2 and the upcoming Battlefield 3, the Xbox 360 looks to be capable of generating even better visuals than some may have thought.
“The extra time will allow us to polish the title to perfection, so that the game offers an ideally balanced, fantastic experience to gamers. As the launch of the game approaches, we will be sharing more details how it will be released on Xbox 360. I trust that despite the release date shift, players will be satisfied with what we are planning for them.”
The statement does seem like a definite reassurance that the game isn’t going to be done lazily, or simply to boost profits. Granted, there is a lot of content in the PC version of The Witcher 2, so creating a console version that can play just as well as the original would be a bit of challenge. Hopefully, it won’t be a huge multi-disc affair, but we won’t be holding our breath on that.
In the mean time, those who wish to know more about the world of The Witcher should check out the book series that spawned the game, starting with “The Last Wish” by Andrzej Sapkowski.
The Witcher 2 will be releasing on Xbox 360 sometime in 2012, with an official release still unclear.
